Stage Managers and Supervisors in the Boston Public Schools
As an educator, performer, leader, or even if you just want to be the best leader possible in your workplace, leadership is often defined as the leading of others. Leadership is the capacity to influence and transform the behaviors and minds of others into the desired outcomes (Goffman, 1973, 1973). So it is not surprising that much of current research in leadership involves identifying the necessary traits of effective leaders. One such trait is emotional intelligence, or more commonly known as EQ (Griffin, 2010).
EQ is commonly used to describe a person’s ability to accurately identify and access his or her own emotions and the emotions of others, understand these emotions and their effects, modulate these emotions, and then use the emotion to facilitate productive behaviors, appropriate decisions and manage interpersonal relationships (Tough, 1998; Weisstub, 1994).
There have been many other definitions proposed for EQ, however, for the purposes of this paper we will be referring to it as EQ in this paper.
There are many different theories and assessments of EQ (Weisstub, 1994). The theory that will be explored in this paper is the Integral Theory of Emotions (Valsø, 2000; Valsø et al., 2008). Valsø’s integrative theory of emotions is used as the foundation for this paper. It is a theory that states that there are three types of emotions or components of emotions: the cognitive, the feeling, and the biological components. The cognitive component of emotions refers to the cognitive-thinking aspect of emotion, the feeling component relates to the affective component of emotions and the biological component refers to the autonomic reactions (Valsø, 2000).
The cognitive component of emotions refers to appraisals. Appraisals are the ways in which a person interprets and interprets information about the world. An appraisal of an event is said to occur when someone has an interpretation of the event and that interpretation is generated by a person. Appraisal can be conceptualized as cognitive-behavioral (Harter, 1993; Weisstub & Apperley, 1985). Therefore, cognitive appraisals lead to behavioral responses.
The feeling component of emotions relates to the affective component of emotions. Affective component is defined as a complex of feelings, moods, attitudes and feelings that reflect a person’s emotional reaction to a given situation (H
